Sewing Cozy: Sewing Mug Tips, Quilting Color, and Modern Quilt Inspiration
Modern Mug Quilt Ideas and Color Tips for Quilting the Mugs and Kisses Quilt
There are almost always a few mugs scattered around here.
Sometimes it’s the everyday ranch coffee—strong, hot, with cream and just a touch of maple syrup. It’s the recipe from the ranch that stays with me no matter where I am, coffee that warms your hands before the day even really begins. So many people who’ve stopped by for a cup over the years have gone home and bought maple syrup when they left. It the coffee that once you try it, it sticks with you like that. (recipe at the end of the blog post)
Then there’s my quiet favorite: Earl Grey, hot, with a little cream. An old comfort. An ode to growing up on Star Trek. It’s the mug I hold in both hands while the iron heats, while a seam cools, while a design idea settles in.
Our mugs live real lives. They catch stray threads in the sewing room. They get reheated more times than we’d like to admit because we’re lost in the making. They sit beside finished quilts when the house is cold and we want to be warm in every possible way.
And honestly? We love our favorite fabrics in much the same way.
That love is what became the Mugs & Kisses quilt—a pattern made for slow stitching, favorite scraps, and the simple joy of a well-loved mug.

A Quilt for Favorite Mugs & Favorite Scraps
This quilt was designed with intention, but not rigidity. It’s meant to feel cozy, playful, and personal—never fussy. (Ok, maybe the handle takes some extra care, but that's ok!)
The pattern is:
-
Scrap-friendly
-
Playful without being chaotic
-
Cozy without feeling busy
There are five different mug blocks, which means you can make it your own:
-
Repeat a single mug for a clean, modern look
-
Mix all five for variety and personality
-
Assign mugs to people, moods, or even seasons
Throughout the pattern, you’ll find small accent areas—the teabag, the flying geese, the little mug details all written by the block. These are some of my favorite parts. They’re made for the tiniest, most-loved scraps. The pieces you can’t throw away. The leftovers from quilts you still adore. The fabrics that already carry a story.
Sewing Tips for the Mugs & Kisses Quilt
A few things I learned while sewing these mugs. Just a few tips that might be helpful as you sew yours.
1. Lock the Seams in the Handle
If you find you're having a hard time getting the two handle units to match up, press the seams on one of the blocks in the opposite direction. This will allow the two handle units to match themselves up by nesting the seams when you sew the two units together to make the handle.
The only consideration you have is if your background is super light or see through, then you might get a shadow through the fabric. You decide which is priority for you!

2. Press Mindfully
With small pieces and layered seams, pressing direction really matters. Press toward the mug background pieces when possible to reduce bulk around the handle. If needed, give those corners a little extra steam and set them with a clapper for an ultra-flat finish.
This is very much a pressing quilt, not a rushing quilt.
3. Batch Sew for Ease
This is a wonderful pattern to sew in batches:
-
Cut all mug pieces at once
-
Prep all handles together
-
Work through each mug as a group
It keeps the process smooth and rhythmic—perfect for a cozy weekend of making.
4. Sew an extra seam for instant scrap blocks
Sew an extra seam 1/2" from the snowball seam on the handle. This will create an instant half square triangle block that's all ready to go for your next scrap quilt!

Color Ideas: Pick Your Flavor of Cozy
This pattern works beautifully with scraps, but it’s also lovely with a thoughtful palette. Because it requires five colors and a sixth for background, that can sometimes feel overwhelming. I put together a few color palette ideas to start with. Choose one of the colors for background and the rest for the mugs. Here's a few ideas to spark something.

Café Modern
Cream, espresso, warm gray, and deep rust on a soft neutral background like natural linen or unbleached cotton.

Modern Earthy Neutral
Soft cream, warm beige, clay brown, deep navy, and charcoal on a muted putty or linen-toned background.

Mid-Century Modern Color
Bold teal, mustard yellow, rust orange, warm brown, and soft cream on a light neutral background like off-white or pale stone.

Warm Earth Tones
Espresso brown, oat cream, mango orange, soft sky blue, and deep olive green on a warm greige or clay-linen background.
Seasonal Sips
Autumn plaids or wintry flannel solids with a darker background—perfect for a seasonal wall hanging or table runner.
This quilt is also a beautiful candidate for fussy cutting—add a favorite motif or tiny text detail in the center of one or two mugs for a personal touch.
