Easy DIY Shamrock Bunting for St. Patty's Day
Lately I've found a lot of joy in finding a small, seasonal project to create. What started as finding a quick Christmas decor project for my brother's cafe, turned into looking forward to finding something small to make for the next holiday or season. With Valentine's over, the next one is St Patty's Day and that's exactly what happened to call this easy, Shamrock bunting into existence!
This garland is minimalistic with just a little green clover, but sure to bring a smile to people's faces. It's infinitely customizable and flexible - the flags can be adjusted to fit your space and you can make as many as you like. The whole project took me about an hour to make this little garland.
Here's the steps if you would like to make it yourself. It's a little improv and made entirely from what I had laying around, so use your scraps and get creative!
Ingredients:
- Burlap or fabric for the flags
- Green fabric for the shamrock shapes
- Paper to make your shamrock shape template
- String for the garland
Step 1: Make a shamrock shape by making three hearts that meet in the middle. Draw a stem from the center. Sizing will depend on how big your want your garland to be. My shamrock is about 2 1/4" square.
Step 2: Using your shamrock template, cut out shamrocks from your green fabric.
Step 3: Cut triangles from your burlap fabric to make the fabric flags. My flags are approximately 8" long and 6" wide at the top.
Step 4: Sew your shamrocks to the burlap flags. I used white thread and didn't worry too much about being perfect.
Step 5: With the backside of the flags facing up, place the string about 1" down from the upper edge. Fold the fabric over the string and top stitch down. Your seam should be about 1/4" from the folded edge which allows the flags to move along the string and not accidentally be sewn into your top stitched seam.
Step 6: Trim the corner triangles and touch up any other bits you need to. Your garland is finished and ready to hang!
Hope you enjoy! Sometimes a little craft project is the perfect creativity boost and the little flags sure bring joy to my day. Happy making xoxo.
